The 2nd International Forum on Seafarers’ Education, Training and Crewing (ETC-2014)

A great International event took place in April this year at passenger terminal of port of Odessa - the 2nd International Forum on Seafarers’ Education, Training and Crewing (ETC-2014) was held in Odessa. It was supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and leading international maritime associations and institutes such as International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), The International Maritime Employers’ Council (IMEC), Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), Black Sea Association of Maritime Institutions (BSAMI), and others.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) was the conference general partner. 120 delegates participated in the conference. Mr. Koji Sekimizu, the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, addressed his welcome message to the 51 companies from 12 countries participants of the Forum. The Forum’s main aim was the improving the quality of ships’ crew forming, demonstration of the modern achievements in the field of maritime education and seafarers’ practical training, experience sharing among industry key specialists. The main sections of the conference were: human factor in shipping, seafarers’ life and career, maritime education and certification, simulation training and assessment, seafarers’ special training. 14 reports were delivered and discussed. The panel discussion on Mentoring at sea, Knowledge sharing and Promotion difficulties attracted a great interest. 4 round tables which were devoted to human resource management, distance education, MLC implementation, and also practical issues of legal assistance for seafarers and companies were held as a part of the conference. Young officers together with Cadets of Odessa National Maritime Academy actively took part in reports discussion and round tables along with experienced professionals.

MSC CS Odessa was represented on the Forum by modernly designed conference display stand, guided by office staff. During two days of the Forum more then 1680 seafarers and cadets were attracted and visited with great interest MSC promo area, looking forward for further employment within the company’s fleet.
